Danielle "Deeva" Jones
Meet Danielle “Deeva” Jones, founder of Deeva’s Faces and makeup artist extraordinaire! Some of you may recognize her from the MAC store at Macy’s in the Fox Hills Mall located in Culver City, CA. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of Miss Danielle doing your makeup, then you already know she is THE BOMB (yes, that is my favorite word!). I have actually known Danielle since elementary school (shout out to WACA!), and I can attest that she has been an artist and fashionista all her life! When we were in 3rd grade, Danielle used to sketch cartoon “deevas,” each with their own unique outfit and hairstyle! Fast forward to high school when Danielle took her love for beauty, fashion, and art to the next level attending the Fashion Careers Center Magnet High School in LA. Fast forward again to 2005 when Danielle founded her own freelance makeup endeavor – Deeva’s Faces!!! Danielle is a firm believer in making her client feel amazing inside and out, offering a one of a kind Deeva's Faces experience!
Here are just a few of the Deevas that Danielle has worked her magic on!!! and be sure to surf on over to the Deeva’s Faces website and check out the rest of Danielle’s amazing portfolio.
I had the chance to sit with Danielle and pick her highly talented brain for a few makeup tips!
Q: I’ve always heard that matching your makeup to your outfit is a major beauty faux pas. How do you feel about it as a makeup artist?
A: As a makeup artist I don’t have any no-no’s in my book of tricks. I have clients that like me to match their makeup to their clothes. There are no rules in makeup. Do what makes you feel beautiful.
Q: What are the top makeup trends right now?
A: Since the Grammy's, I’ve noticed frosty eye shadows are making a comeback. They were out of style for a while, but Rihanna wore frosty shadow at the Grammy’s and it’s been popping up everywhere. In general for summer it’s all about peachy and bronzy, with a pop of color…bright greens, pinks, reds, and oranges. MAC launched its new “To the Beach” collection, which features a lot of bright colors.
A: Right now… for non-makeup, I am on the new Bronze Body Oil. It’s from the new “To the Beach” collection and its insane. I put it on and I could actually see the gold shimmer in it. I’m on it! For makeup, I love the chromagraphic liner pencil in NW15/NC20, also by MAC. It gives you that natural, shimmery look.
Q: For those who can’t afford department store brands what “drugstore brand” products do you recommend (i.e. cover girl, L’oreal, Revlon, etc)?
A: L'oreal HIP pigments. I like them because they're pigmented and you can get great vivid colors. For foundation I like The Queen collection by Cover Girl for women of color. Oh, and I also like Iman's makeup. Her makeup is THEE business!
Q: It seems like there’s new revolutionary mascara popping up on the market every day. What mascara do you wear? And what mascaras do you like for lengthening? Volumizing? Waterproof?
A: I wear Studio Fix Lash by MAC. It darkens, lengthens, and thickens. It kinda gives the look of false lashes. Of course everybody knows about Dior. It really volumizes lashes and makes them look full. For waterproof mascara...I like Maybelline Colossal Lash... it does it all. It lengthens, thickens, and its waterproof.
Q: False lashes have been around forever, but lately lash extensions are all the rage, and they’ve popped up in every nail salon in LA. I’ve heard that the glue used to attach these lashes damages the natural lashes causing them to fall out… permanently? Do you have any tips for using false lashes without damaging your own lashes?
A: First of all, I do not recommend "nail shop lashes.” I am totally anti-nail shop lashes. If you want lash extensions, go to a professional. There are places you can go and it costs about $90 as opposed to $20 at the nail shop, but they use a technique won’t leave your lashes brittle and damaged. I actually prefer temporary lash strips that you can put on for the night and take off before you go to sleep. They are actually very easy to put on. Take a hand mirror and put it on my bathroom counter. Look down (with your eyes, not your head) into the mirror as you place lashes. This will help minimize the blinking so you can place the lashes. It takes some practice but over time it gets easier.
Q: What is your go-to look?
A: black liquid liner, MAC #3 or #7 lashes, MAC mineralized skin finish powder, MAC studio fix mascara, loud & lovely cremesheen gloss by MAC, and MAC cream colour base in fabulush as a blush. It real makes your skin glow.
Q: Achieving the perfect smokey eye is an acquired skill… there’s a fine line between smokey and raccoon. Any tips?
A: Whenever I do a smokey eye, I use four colors, each slightly lighter than the other and blended from the lid out. The lightest color should be what we call your “best friend color” which is basically a color that is the same color as your skin. My best friend color is an eye shadow by MAC in “texture.” Start with a good dark base on the entire lid. The lid is the entire space where you can feel your eyeball underneath. If you feel the bone, that’s not your lid. Next, blend a dark shadow on to the lid on top of the base and blend it outwards into your third color, then blend your third color into your fourth “best friend color.” Most importantly, if you are doing a smokey eye, you should always have a makeup remover on hand, so you can remove the eye shadow that falls from the brush

Q: Do you have any tips for using colored eye shadows without looking like a clown?
A: Anytime you use color, it’s really about blending. You can wear the brightest colors but if you blend them well, it will look beautiful and natural. It should also be paired with a nude base Remember your “best friend color.” Fade/blend the brighter color into a natural base for a natural look that pops, and looks really beautiful.
